5 winter sports to try today

When you hear the words ‘winter sports’, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Is it skiing or snowboarding? What about curling or skating?

Whether you try them alone or with your friends and family, there is no shortage of outdoor sports to try and they’re all great ways to increase your physical activity.

Here are five winter sports to consider trying this season. Although they require specialized equipment, it is often possible to rent equipment so that you can decide if the sport is right for you before you invest in a purchase.

Snowshoeing

If you like to go for long, winter walks then this might just be the sport for you.  One of the benefits of this activity is that you can adjust it to your current fitness level.  Enjoy a leisurely snowshoe around a local park or venture out onto a more challenging trail.

Cross-country skiing

Not unlike snowshoeing, cross country skiing can range from leisurely to an incredibly active workout. One of the many benefits of cross-country skiing is that it is a low-impact sport, making it easier on your knees and joints.

Ice skating

Ice skating is one of the most accessible winter sports. It’s a family-friendly activity that you can enjoy with your children and unlike many other winter sports, you can practice ice skating all year round by heading to one of the ice rinks in your area.

Ice hockey

If you’re looking for a great way to increase your physical fitness while challenging yourself with some new skills, hockey is a great option. Check your local community rinks for lessons and/or shinny. Shinny is a casual hockey game where most players wear little equipment (but don’t forget your helmet!) and often there is no goalie. /p>

Snowboarding

As one of the most well-loved winter sports, snowboarding is a great option if you are ready for more of a challenge. Most skiing resorts offer snowboarding as part of their available services as lessons for beginners are advisable as you learn balance and board control.
