How emotions impact health
Emotions can influence both physical and mental health. Due to the close connection between the mind and body, a person's thoughts and feelings can impact their physical state.
Emotions influence the body’s many systems, including the cardiovascular system, immune system, and endocrine system. They are powerful enough to cause the release of cortisol, leading to the stress (fight, flight, or freeze) response. Prolonged elevation of stress hormones is known to cause poor mental health, hormonal imbalances, and increased blood pressure.
Emotional wellbeing is closely linked to mental health as well. Continual negative emotions can contribute to the development of mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression. These conditions can negatively impact mood, relationships and quality of life.
Working to support your emotional health is an important part of overall wellbeing.
