How much caffeine is ok?
Many people enjoy caffeinated beverages, whether it’s in their morning coffee, tea or the energy drink they consume as a mid-afternoon pick-me-up. Caffeine acts as a stimulant, potentially improving concentration and reducing fatigue. It can also provide pleasure and enjoyment. However, caffeine can have some negative effects, including disrupting sleep, restlessness and an increased heart rate. Is caffeine a friend or foe and how much caffeine is too much?
It is generally thought that it is relatively safe to consume up to 400 mg of caffeine each day. The amount is lower for pregnant women. An 8 oz (240 mL) cup of coffee has approximately 80 - 100 mg of caffeine; however, many servings of coffee are much larger so it is important to know the quantity you are drinking each day. Caffeine is also found in sodas and chocolate so it is important to consider these as well.
