Juice versus whole fruit - is one healthier?

With the popularity of smoothies and cold-pressed juices you may have asked yourself, which is healthier - juice or whole fruit?

To juice or not to juice?

Juicing your fruits doesn’t necessarily make the nutrients more available. However, turning whole fruits into liquid may be easier for you to consume if you’re on the go or want something quick and healthy to drink while at work.

The beneficial micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) are retained when you juice whole fruits, as long as you maintain all of the liquid that is produced during the juicing process. However, a large amount of the fiber that is naturally found in the fruit is removed when you juice them.

Dietary plant-based fiber is necessary to support your digestive functions and gut microbiome, and can help lower disease risk. Fruits are a great source of fiber so juicing them could make it difficult for you to achieve your daily fiber target.

Ultimately, it’s up to you whether you want to juice your fruits and drink them or eat them whole. If you’re somebody who prefers drinking your fruit as opposed to eating it, it is important to ensure that you are still meeting your daily fiber targets through other food options.
