Let the Sunshine in. Here's the Scoop on Natural Light

Have you ever wondered why we’re told to open up the curtains as soon as we wake up?

There’s a reason for this! And that reason is to allow natural light to flow into your room.

Human bodies work on something called a circadian rhythm, which is largely determined by the rise and fall of the sun. You need to be exposed to natural light when you first get out of bed to wake your body up. This can help you to feel more awake and motivated for the day ahead.

Natural light is required for your body to synthesize vitamin D. There is a precursor in your skin that gets converted into its active form upon exposure to sunlight. This is an important process that helps to keep your body healthy.

Vitamin D acts as a hormone in the body. It is a key regulator of bone and calcium metabolism, and it can help to prevent bone disorders such as osteoporosis. It is also necessary for growth and development in infancy, as well as insulin regulation and  immune function.

Lack of vitamin D has been linked to a number of diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, and depression. By increasing the amount of natural light that your skin is exposed to, you can potentially reduce your risk of some physical and mental health disorders.

To optimize health, it is recommended that we get at least 30 minutes of natural light every day. So, open your curtains and get outside in the fresh air every single day!
