Mealtime - More Than Just Nutrients?

When we think of the benefits of food we often consider the nutrients and energy we get that allows our body to function well.  However, there is more to food than nourishing our body; it can feed our mental health, too!  Preparing and eating delicious food can bring joy; it also provides an opportunity to boost our social health by connecting us with others.

Eating together allows us to share experiences, both those at the table in our lives in general.  For parents, family meals provide a sense of connectedness for children and studies indicate this time spent together can improve literacy and decrease behavioral problems in children.

Sharing meals helps promote trust and closeness and provides the opportunity to talk, share about your day and appreciate one another.   Consider eating with your colleagues at work, or invite friends to join you for a meal on a regular basis to feed your body and your soul.
