Three Most Common Sports Injuries and How to Modify Your Activities to Stay Active

Unfortunately, sports injuries are fairly common. There is always a risk of injury in any sports that you do. Although many of these injuries are treatable, it’s important to modify your activity properly around your injury to avoid causing further damage.

Patellofemoral syndrome is the most common injury and is caused by persistent impact through the knee joint. These injuries can take 6-8 weeks to recover from. Avoid any high-impact activity during this time, and focus on strengthening the leg muscles.

Overuse of the shoulder joints can cause injury and pain. Around a quarter of all sports injuries involve the shoulder. Athletes who participate in sports that require a lot of overheads or movements such as tennis, baseball, and basketball are prone to shoulder injuries. When training with a shoulder injury, modify your activity to avoid placing the joint in unfavorable positions. Focus on strengthening the deltoids and supporting muscles.

Tennis elbow is caused by persistent repetitive movement of the elbows. If you want to continue training around this injury, switch to lower-impact alternatives, and rest as much as possible. Avoid exercises that place too much stress through the elbows, and instead, work to improve your upper body movement patterns.
