Weightlifting vs. cardio

Weightlifting and cardio are two different training styles and both have their benefits. Most people prefer one over the other but there is a place for both forms of training in your routine.

Combining cardio with weight lifting can help maximize your gains and progress. However, before you can determine which is the best workout split for you, it’s best to learn what each one is and its advantages.

Weightlifting

Weightlifting, which is often referred to as strength training or resistance training, involves lifting weights to challenge your muscles and stimulate growth. Moderate to heavy weightlifting increases muscle power, strength and size.

You can weight lift with dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, and resistance training machines. Lifting weights helps improve your overall strength, balance and stability.

The benefits of weight training include:

  • Muscle hypertrophy (growth)
  • Increased strength and power
  • Better agility, coordination, balance and stability
  • Improved bone health

Cardiovascular training

Cardiovascular exercise (cardio for short) involves performing an exercise that increases your heart rate and breathing rate. The main aim of cardio is to improve or maintain your cardiovascular and respiratory fitness levels, but you can also build a small, limited amount of muscle through cardio activities.

Popular cardiovascular exercises include running, cycling, swimming, dancing or using a cardio machine in the gym, such as a treadmill or elliptical trainer.

The benefits of cardio include:

  • Improved cardiovascular and respiratory health
  • Improved circulation
  • Better muscular endurance
  • Some muscle growth abilities
  • Improved endorphin release, leading to better mood
