What are carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates, or carbs, are an important part of your overall diet. They provide energy to your body and support muscle growth. For a healthy diet, you need a balance of carbohydrates, proteins and unsaturated fats every day.

Most people need 45-65 percent of their total daily calories from carbohydrates. For example, women are encouraged to maintain a 2000 calorie-per-day diet, which would equate to 225-325 grams of carbohydrates per day. Within that total carbohydrate intake, 30-35 grams (for men) or 25-32 grams (for women) should come from fibre.

However, this is only an estimate. People who have diabetes or other health conditions will need to adjust this amount to meet their personal needs.

Types of Carbs

There are three types of carbs:

  • Sugar
  • Starch
  • Fiber

They are categorized as either simple or complex. Simple carbs break down in the body quickly and provide you with a hit of energy. This includes things like chocolate, carbonated drinks, and bread. Some healthy foods are simple carbs; however, many processed foods contain simple carbohydrates that are high in calories and low in nutrition.

Complex carbs, however, keep you fuller for longer and do not spike your blood sugar. Fiber, fruits, and oats are examples of complex carbs.
