What Are Lean Proteins?

Proteins are one of the three macronutrients that every human needs to eat in their diets, alongside carbohydrates and fats. They are essential for normal bodily function, including cell growth and repair and the maintenance of muscle mass. Protein also plays an important role in satiation and fullness.

Lean proteins are those that contain high levels of amino acids but low levels of fats. In particular, lean proteins are low in saturated fats, which have been linked to an increased risk of a number of health conditions, including heart disease.

The amount of protein that you need depends on your age, height, weight, sex, and activity levels. Somebody who regularly works out and lifts heavy weights will need more protein to repair the damaged muscle fibers than somebody who doesn’t.

Some great lean protein sources include Greek yogurt, tofu, chicken, turkey, white fish, beans, and lentils.
