What Does Being in a 'Flow' Really Mean?

You have probably heard the terms ‘get in the zone’ or “in the flow’ before.

Being in the zone refers to a positive flow state. One where you are effortlessly gliding through your tasks and overcoming barriers easily.

When you’re in a state of flow and your head is in the zone, your performance improves, and challenges seem less significant. For these reasons, being in a good flow is associated with improved physical and/or mental performance.

Athletes, academics, and creatives all aim to get into the flow before an important game or work session. It helps them get hyper-focused on the particular task at hand so they can complete it to the best of their abilities.

The question is, how do you get in the zone? How can you find the so-called ‘flow’? Here are some top tips to help you find your flow.

Clear Your Mind

It’s never been easier to get distracted when you’re trying to do work or get creative.

Nowadays, you’ve got your phone notifying you of a new message, work emails coming through at all hours of the day, and an endless to-do list that is constantly on your mind. These things can make it much harder for you to get in the zone and stay there.

By spending some time clearing your mind before you sit down to work or head onto the field for a game, you can maximize your chances of staying in the flow. It reduces the chances of your mind getting distracted, which can bring you out of the zone.

Remove Distractions

Speaking of getting distracted, another great way to ensure you can get into the zone is by removing any distractions. Although some distractions are unavoidable, many distractions can be taken care of before you begin working.

Some great things you can do to get rid of potential distractions include:

  • Leaving your phone in another room
  • Putting your phone on silent
  • Taking your kids to school or to their friend’s house before sitting down to work
  • Going to the bathroom before you start working
  • Bringing a snack to your desk before your work session so you don’t need to get up if you’re hungry

Don’t Go Hungry

Fuelling your brain with the right amount and right types of food is key to your success when you are trying to get in the flow.

If you feel hungry, it’s bound to distract you and take you out of the zone. You will lack focus and will not be able to concentrate as well. This is particularly important if you are taking part in a sports match and you need the energy to physically move around the pitch and concentrate on the game.
