What is good posture?
Proper posture refers to proper alignment and positioning of the body. Using proper posture reduces strain on the joints and muscles. Here's what good posture is all about:
- Proper alignment of body parts. When standing, your head, shoulders, hips, knees, and feet should be in a straight line, with your ears over your shoulders and your shoulders over your hips.
- Balanced weight distribution, where the body weight should be evenly distributed between both feet when standing. When sitting, your weight should be distributed equally on both hips.
- Your spine should have its natural S-curve when viewed from the side, with the slight curve being in your lower back (lumbar spine, a smaller curve outward in your upper back (thoracic spine), and a slight curve inward in your neck (cervical spine).
