What is serotonin?
Serotonin is a neurochemical, often referred to as a feel-good hormone. It is responsible for regulating a wide range of different physiological and psychological processes in the human body.
It’s estimated between 85% to 95% of the total serotonin in the body is produced in the gut. You’ll also have some serotonin in your central nervous system (CNS).
Here are some of the primary roles of serotonin in the body:
- Mood regulation
- Regulation of the circadian rhythm (sleep-wake cycle)
- Appetite regulation
- Cognitive functions
- Pain perception
