What is the healthy plate model?

The Healthy Plate Model, also known as The Healthy Eating Plate, is a reference guide that people can use to create healthy, well-balanced meals.

Following The Healthy Plate Model makes it easier for you to stick to a healthy eating regime and maximize your nutrition. It involves a set of guidelines that determine how much of your plate should consist of which food groups.

The Healthy Eating Plate is used by professional dietitians and nutritionists to help their clients understand nutrition in more detail. It’s a simple diagram that everybody can understand and easily implement into their lives.

Here are the guidelines laid out in The Healthy Plate Model.

  • Almost half of your plate should consist of vegetables. Eat a wide range of different vegetables of all varieties and colors.
  • Whole grains should make up one-quarter of your plate, such as wheat, barley, quinoa, oats, and brown rice.
  • Protein should make another quarter of your plate, including poultry, fish, beans, legumes, and nuts.
  • Consume a moderate number of healthy oils, such as olive oil, coconut oil, and peanut oil.
  • Drink water, coffee, or tea and limit sugary drinks, sodas, and dairy-based drink consumption.
