Winter fitness tips
Staying fit in the winter months can be challenging, thanks to the colder weather, icy roads, and shorter daylight hours. There’s also the festive period that tempts many people to take time off the gym and indulge in delicious treats instead.
However, with the right tools and strategies, you can maintain a great fitness routine and stay on track toward reaching your health and fitness goals. Here are some top tips for staying fit during the winter months.
Switch to indoor workouts
If you usually exercise outside, consider transitioning at least some of your workouts indoors. Doing so prevents you from needing to base your workouts on the weather, purchase specialized clothing or risk weather-related injuries.
There are lots of great ways to exercise without going outside, for example, you can join a gym, head to a local indoor swimming pool or even workout from the comfort of your own home.
Dress in warm clothes
If you elect to exercise outside (and there are lots of reasons to continue doing so!) you’re going to need to think strategically about what you wear. Opt for layered insulating gear that is moisture-wicking (you do not want your clothing getting wet with sweat) and add gloves and a hat to your workout gear to protect your hands and head from the cold winds.
Be careful of ice
Ice isn’t always easy to spot, especially when you’re concentrating on exercising. Opt for maintained areas and check if they have been cleared of ice. You could also consider wearing spikes that fit over your shoes or boots.
