Does the circadian rhythm affect when you should workout?
The circadian rhythm refers to the internal biological clock within our bodies that regulates our sleep-wake cycle, metabolic processes, hormonal fluctuations and levels of alertness. As a result, the circadian rhythm may influence exercise performance.
Core body temperature reaches its lowest point in the early morning and peaks in the late afternoon or early evening. Warm body temperature is associated with increased muscle flexibility and efficiency, making late afternoon or early evening an optimal time for strength training or power activities. What’s more, muscle strength tends to be higher in the late afternoon, compared to the early morning. However, exercising too close to bedtime may negatively impact sleep so it is important to develop a schedule that works best for your goals and sleep quality.
Although you might have a goal of setting a personal best, it is even more important to develop an exercise routine you can consistently stick to. After all, the best workout is the one you actually do!
