How to do a squat with weights

Want to learn how to squat properly? Follow this step-by-step guide:

  1. Load the barbell with your desired weight if you want to add extra weight to your squat
  2. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointing slightly outward and the barbell on your back if you’re using additional weight. Ensure your weight is evenly distributed across both feet.
  3. Tighten your core muscles and take a deep breath in as you lower down toward the ground. Drive your hips back to initiate the movement, as though you’re sitting on a chair.
  4. As your hips move back, bend your knees to lower your body. Keep your knees in line with your feet, preventing them from collapsing inward.
  5. Keep your chest up and your back straight. Avoid rounding or arching your back.
  6. Lower your body until your thighs are parallel to the ground, or go deeper if you have the flexibility to do so, keeping your weight in your heels.
  7. Push through your heels as you extend your hips and knees simultaneously to return to a standing position.
