How to do a squat with weights
Want to learn how to squat properly? Follow this step-by-step guide:
- Load the barbell with your desired weight if you want to add extra weight to your squat
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointing slightly outward and the barbell on your back if you’re using additional weight. Ensure your weight is evenly distributed across both feet.
- Tighten your core muscles and take a deep breath in as you lower down toward the ground. Drive your hips back to initiate the movement, as though you’re sitting on a chair.
- As your hips move back, bend your knees to lower your body. Keep your knees in line with your feet, preventing them from collapsing inward.
- Keep your chest up and your back straight. Avoid rounding or arching your back.
- Lower your body until your thighs are parallel to the ground, or go deeper if you have the flexibility to do so, keeping your weight in your heels.
- Push through your heels as you extend your hips and knees simultaneously to return to a standing position.
