How to manage a fitness setback

When you set a fitness goal, you might find that it’s not always easy to stay on track and that setbacks are difficult to overcome.  However, when you are working towards your goal, you will naturally go through periods when you are highly motivated and periods when you find it difficult to stay committed. If you’re experiencing a fitness setback, don’t beat yourself up about it. There are things that you can do to overcome them and the first step is identifying what your barrier is.

When you’re experiencing a setback due to injury or illness, the most important thing is to rest,  recover and speak to your healthcare practitioner.  You don’t want to set yourself back even further by returning to exercise before your body is ready.

Time constraints can also be difficult when you’re trying to reach a fitness goal. If this is setting you back at the moment, you might need to take a look at your schedule and identify where you can squeeze in your workouts.

Fitness setbacks can also be caused when you are no longer enjoying your workouts or you cannot see improvements. Take these as opportunities to try new things.  You can sign up for a new fitness class, try working out with a different playlist, change up your workout routine or invite a friend to exercise with you.
