Skip these foods before bedtime for a better night's sleep

If you struggle to get a decent sleep each night, you might have tried several supplements, or maybe you’ve attempted to switch up your bedtime routine. Sometimes, these things are enough to improve your sleep quality and quantity.

But if you’ve tried the above and your sleep still remains poor, there might be other factors at play, such as the foods that you’re eating in the hours leading up to your bedtime. There are certain foods that can impact your ability to get to sleep quickly or stay asleep during the night.

So, what foods should you avoid to improve your sleep? Ideally, skip caffeine-containing foods and drinks, like chocolate, coffee, and tea. You should also avoid high-sugar foods that can spike your blood glucose levels, as this will divert your body’s attention away from sleep and towards bringing your blood sugar levels back down to a normal level.  Other culprits that can disrupt your sleep include spicy foods, high-fat foods and alcohol.

If possible, have your last meal at least three before going to bed to give your body enough time to fully digest it. If you’re going to snack just before bedtime, stick to foods that have a low glycemic index and are easy on your digestive system.
