The Benefits of Eating Local
Most of us don’t give a second thought about where we get our food. We head straight to the grocery store and do our weekly shopping every week, grabbing our usuals or the foods that are on offer that week.
But often, the foods at grocery stores have traveled a long distance before they reach the shelves. As a result, they have a higher carbon footprint based on the land-and-farm-based carbon emissions and the carbon released during transportation. They are usually not as fresh as local foods because of the long time they travel.
When possible, consider buying your food locally in order to reduce your carbon footprint and enjoy fresher, more delicious foods. You can also improve your local economy by supporting small businesses and farmers in your area.
