The impact of social media on mental health

Social media has become an integral part of our lives, allowing us to connect, share and communicate with others. While it offers many benefits, such as staying connected with friends and family, promoting social causes, and accessing information, there is growing concern about the impact of social media on mental health.

Here's a closer look at the relationship between social media and mental wellbeing.

Social comparison

Social media platforms often present a curated version of people's lives, highlighting their achievements, experiences and positive moments. This can lead to social comparison, where individuals compare their own lives to others and may feel inadequate or unhappy in the process. Constant exposure to others' seemingly perfect lives may contribute to feelings of low self-esteem, jealousy and depression.

Fear of missing out (FOMO)

Social media platforms provide a constant stream of updates and activities, making it easy to feel like we're missing out on experiences others are having. The fear of missing out (often shortened to FOMO)  can lead to anxiety, stress and a constant need to be connected and up to date. The pressure to constantly engage with social media to avoid missing out can negatively affect mental wellbeing.

Cyberbullying and online harassment

Social media platforms can be breeding grounds for cyberbullying and online harassment. Individuals may face negative comments, trolling or targeted attacks, significantly impacting their mental health. The anonymity and distance provided by social media can embolden people to engage in harmful behavior that can cause emotional distress and even lead to psychological trauma.

Negative body image and disordered eating

The proliferation of idealized body images and unrealistic beauty standards on social media can contribute to negative body image issues and disordered eating behaviors, especially in the fashion, beauty and fitness industries.

Constant exposure to perfectly edited photos and comparison with influencers and celebrities may lead to body dissatisfaction, poor self-image and unhealthy behaviors related to food and exercise.
