Tips for new cyclists

If you’re new to cycling and you want to optimize your skill and technique, you’ve come to the right place!

Cycling is an incredible form of exercise that works your whole body, particularly your lower body muscles and your core. Aside from the benefits of cycling for your physical fitness, you get a number of other benefits from cycling.

Your mental fitness gets a boost from bike riding, especially when you are cycling outside. You can surround yourself with nature and breathe in the crisp, fresh air. The sunlight on your skin increases your happy hormone production and creates Vitamin D.

Many people struggle to know where to start when it comes to cycling. We've rounded up a number of top tips to help you get started when you’re a complete beginner.

Adjust Your Saddle to the Right Height

Getting the right seat height is essential to preventing poor cycling posture and pain when you’re cycling. Your saddle should be set so that your knee is slightly bent when you’re at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

Maintaining the correct seat height will keep your muscles and joints safe while you are cycling, reducing the risk of injuries.

Stock Up On Essentials

When you’re heading out on a bike ride, there are a few essential items that you can’t forget, such as:

  • A properly fitted helmet
  • Water bottle to stay hydrated
  • Cycling gloves to keep your hands well-protected
  • Bike lock or chain in case you need to stop off somewhere and secure your bike

Safety First

In addition to wearing a helmet there are other important ways to keep safe on your bike.  Don’t ride while wearing your earbuds/headphones.  As much as you might want to listen to music or your favorite podcast to keep you company, it is essential that you can hear the traffic or other cyclists around you.  Ensure that your bike is equipped with front and back lights, and also a bell.  Finally, remember to look up and ahead when biking so that you can quickly spot anything in the path ahead of you that you might need to steer over or around.
