What causes an afternoon energy crash?

Have you experienced the mid-afternoon slump? It can leave you feeling tired, unmotivated and unfocused.

So, what causes the energy crash and what can we do about it? Let’s take a look.

Circadian rhythms

The human body has a natural circadian rhythm, influencing that we are most alert in the mornings and experience a gradual decrease in energy throughout the day. Many people’s circadian rhythms cause them to have a dip in their energy levels between 2 pm and 3 pm.

Blood sugar levels

Individuals who consume refined carbohydrate lunches or eat sugary snacks during lunch or the early afternoon, may experience an energy crash a few hours later due to a decrease in blood sugar levels. Opt for lean proteins, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates

Dehydration

A lack of adequate water intake can leave you feeling fatigued and drained of energy.  Keep water handy and take sips throughout the day to help prevent dehydration.

Sedentary lifestyle

Sitting for long periods without movement can lead to reduced blood flow to the brain and body, leaving us sleepy and lacking in energy. Getting up to stretch and/or a brisk walk can help perk you up.

Caffeine overconsumption

While caffeine can provide a temporary energy boost (which is the reason why so many of us adore a morning coffee, or two), consuming too much of it can cause an energy crash. If you often sip coffee for lunch or throughout the workday, you might find that you're more susceptible to the common mid-afternoon energy slump. Try switching to decaffeinated beverages or plain water.
