What is hybrid training?

Hybrid training refers to the process of combining two types of training. The most common form of hybrid training is the combination of cardiovascular exercise and resistance training (also called strength training or weight lifting). Hybrid exercises can also  refer to two different exercises that are combined together.

There are many benefits of incorporating hybrid training into your exercise routine. In this article we will focus on combining cardio and strength training.

What are the benefits of hybrid training?

When you continually train in the same way, your body begins to adapt. This can cause you to plateau with your progress in the gym. By choosing a hybrid training style, you keep your body guessing and continually challenge your muscles. It adds variety to your program in new and exciting ways.

Hybrid training also keeps you mentally stimulated during your workout. You won’t lose focus or motivation when you’re at the gym if every workout is slightly different.

With hybrid training you get the benefits of exercise that boosts your cardiovascular health, combined with the benefits of building muscles that help you perform daily activities and can help reduce your risk of injury.

How to start a hybrid exercise program

When you combine cardio with weight training, you are gaining both endurance and strength, ensuring your body gets the types of exercise it needs. Current recommendations for weekly exercise include 150 minutes of moderately-vigorous exercise, plus 2-3 weekly strength training sessions.  To reach this you can include each in your weekly routine, for example, power walking and weight training on different days, or depending on your schedule and fitness level, some people combine them in one workout.

As with all new exercise programs, it is important to speak with your healthcare provider before starting.
