What is kefir?

Kefir is a fermented dairy drink that is made using grains. The term 'kefir' comes from the Turkish word 'keyif', which translates in English to 'good feeling'. It is fermented using yeast and probiotic bacteria, making it a healthy drink for humans to consume.

This fermented drink can be made using cow's milk, goat's milk or sheep's milk. The added yeast and bacteria ferment the lactose sugars in the milk and create a healthy, low-fat drink  Coconut milk and oat milk varieties also exist but their nutritional properties and health benefits differ for animal dairy kefir.

The health benefits that have been associated with kefir include:

  • Improved gut health and better gut microbial diversity
  • Good source of calcium for bone health
  • May help promote weight management
