What is tennis elbow?
Tennis elbow, medically known as lateral epicondylitis, is a painful condition that affects the tendons in the elbow. It typically occurs due to repetitive motions of the wrist and arm, causing overuse and strain on the tendons that attach to the outside of the elbow. Despite its name, tennis elbow can affect anyone who performs repetitive gripping activities or activities that extend the wrist and hand, not just tennis players.
Common symptoms include pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow, which may radiate down the forearm. There can also be weakness in the affected arm, making it difficult to grip or lift objects.
Treatment options include rest, ice therapy, over-the-counter pain medications, physical therapy to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility, and in severe cases, corticosteroid injections or surgery may be necessary.
Tennis elbow can often be prevented or managed by avoiding repetitive motions, using proper technique during activities, and incorporating stretching and strengthening exercises into your routine.
