Why is it So Hard to Say Sorry?
Everybody makes mistakes, and sometimes these mistakes require an apology. While an apology is a quick and easy thing to do, many people find it difficult to apologize to somebody else, even when they have done something wrong.
The reasons why you might find it difficult to apologize can vary. In this article, we’re going to cover some of the main reasons why you might be finding it difficult to say the words ‘I’m sorry’ to somebody else.
You’re Scared of Rejection
When you owe somebody an apology, you may know that you have done something wrong. As much as you might want to apologize for your wrongdoings, the fear of rejection might be holding you back.
It’s not uncommon for somebody to be scared of getting the cold shoulder or never being forgiven by their friend or family member. Even if you say sorry to somebody, there is no guarantee that they will accept your apology and move on.
You’re Stubborn
Another common reason why you might struggle to apologize is that you are stubborn. Being able to stand up for yourself is one thing but being stubborn is something completely different.
A lot of the time, stubbornness can prevent you from moving on after a tough situation, despite knowing that a quick apology is all it takes. You might not want to back down and show any signs of weakness in front of the other person, so you would prefer to continue the animosity and avoid apologizing.
You’re Scared of Being Vulnerable
Vulnerability can be difficult to embrace. When you say sorry to somebody, you are opening up emotionally, and this can be a scary process. You might worry that you are admitting to incompetency or mistakes, and this can feel humiliating. Because of this, you avoid these feelings altogether by refusing to apologize.
However, an apology can be an important step towards healing a divide. When offered in a timely, authentic and appropriate manner, it can help reduce conflict, promote forgiveness and alleviate stress.
